at the Gothia (World Youth) Cup, Sweden

'I recommend the Gothia Cup to all youth teams who enjoy loads of games, unusual environs and beautiful Swedish people!'

Master in Charge Football Charterhouse
Charterhouse attended their fourth Gothia Cup since 1992, sending an U16 age group squad of 18 players with five staff. Staying in the very pleasant Novotel hotel south of the city, they enjoyed eight days in Gothenburg playing in the World's biggest Youth Football tournament on good grassy pitches.
The opening ceremony held in the prestigious Ullevi stadium made every one aware how important this tournament was and after three league games in three days the Carthusians found themselves second in their league, thus qualifying for the knock out phase. The hardest fixture was against a 1st division outfit from Allborg, Denmark (2-4 defeat) and their easiest was against Torslanda (8-0 win) who come from the Volvo City in west Gothenburg. The other league match was drawn 1-1 against a Stockholm side called Skogstrops GoIF.

The knock out match involved an 8am kick off and this meant leaving the hotel at 6am!! If we had won the league we would have kicked off at a more civilised time! Unaccustomed to such physiological shocks the Charterhouse team did not convert their chances and lost this match to another Danish side, Assens FC 2-4, a game Charterhouse should have won. So that ended the cup run but a final friendly match was arranged on the Friday against an American side USA Pride from Los Angeles. This was drawn 1-1 and was very genial.

The finals are played on the Friday evening and Saturday mainly in the Ullevi stadium in front of crowd of a few thousands and then after final visits to the discos, theme park, museums and art galleries the Carthusians wended their way home on the Sunday morning much the wiser for their cultural exchange.

I recommend the Gothia Cup to all youth teams who enjoy loads of games, unusual environs and beautiful Swedish people!
